Biography

Nickola Pottinger (b. 1986, Kingston, Jamaica) lives and works in New York, NY. Her haunting and idiosyncratic sculptures refer to the artist’s birthplace and ancestral homeland of Jamaica. Pottinger creates sculptural forms inspired by ‘duppies,’ the Jamaican Patois word for ghosts. Blending animal, figurative, and functional elements, Pottinger employs a vast range of materials into haunting works that exude a particular presence.

Pottinger received her BFA from The Cooper Union for The Advancement of Science and Art in 2008. She has had solo exhibitions at Mrs., Maspeth NY (2024); Deanna Evans Projects, New York NY (2022); and Parker Gallery, Los Angeles CA (2019). Pottinger has a solo exhibition at the Aldrich Contemporary Art Center, Ridgefield CT in 2025.

Her work has been included in group exhibitions at DOCUMENT, Chicago IL (2023); Sargent’s Daughters, New York NY (2023); Chapter, New York NY (2022); Galveston Art Residency, Galveston TX (2022); and the New Museum, New York NY (2021); amongst others.
