Biography

Maija Peeples-Bright (b. 1942, Riga, Latvia) lives and works in Rocklin, CA. A founding member of the Bay Area’s Nut Art group and more commonly known Funk Art movement, Peeples-Bright’s iconic word play and penchant for immersive patterning is visible in her sculptures and paintings.

She received her BFA from the University of California, Davis in 1964 and her MFA from the University of California, Davis in 1965. She has had solo and two person exhibitions at Venus Over Manhattan, New York NY (2024); Parker Gallery, Los Angeles CA (2023, 2020); Nicelle Beauchene, New York NY (2019); and Guerrero Gallery, San Francisco CA (2018); amongst others.

Her work has been included in group exhibitions at the Museum of Art and Design, New York NY (2023); Deitch Gallery, Los Angeles CA (2023); the Crocker Art Museum, Sacramento, CA (2022); the Manetti Shrem Museum of Art, Davis CA (2021); and Gallery 12.26, Dallas TX (2021); amongst others. Her work is held in public collections at the Burlington Art Centre, Burlington, Ontario, Canada; Nevada Museum of Art, Reno NV; Minneapolis Institute of Art, Minneapolis MN; UC Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive, Berkeley CA; and the Cincinnati ArtMuseum, Cincinnati OH; amongst others.
