The figures in artist Angelo Vasta’s vibrant oil-pastel drawings embrace, lock arms, balance hand-in-hand. Echoing his background in dance videography, characters are often captured in movement. Other times, the works call to mind the still snapshot of a memory.
Vasta, whose show "To Hold Myself" is currently on view at Rebecca Camacho Presents in San Francisco through April 19, corresponded with ALL ARTS to answer the question “How has art changed you?” Read the response below and check out more musings from artists in the series "How Art Changed Me," which spotlights the impact of art on individual’s lives.
“Art is constantly changing me. It has become a channel for me to connect with something larger than myself. Through art, I have found a lens through which I can observe the world around me, providing me with the space to reflect on my reality and how I perceive everything. It’s a medium that allows me to understand not just the world but also my inner self. It helps me listen to my inner voice and reclaim my true identity.
When I start a drawing I have an idea, but I never know exactly where it will go. As I work, the drawing tells me what’s next, and that’s when I start to listen closely to my own voice. It’s a process of finding what feels true to myself, something that wasn’t easy for me growing up...
