Biography

David Gilbert (b. 1982, New York, NY) lives and works in Los Angeles, CA. Gilbert’s photographs document assemblages and groupings of objects organized into complex and intriguing mise-en-scene within his studio. Gilbert’s imagery invites interpretation, and his luscious works embrace ambiguity as a queer positionality and open-endedness.

He received his BFA from Tisch School of the Arts, New York University in 2004 and his MFA from the University of California, Riverside in 2011. He has had solo exhibitions at the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art (SECCA), Winston-Salem (2024); Rebecca Camacho Presents, San Francisco (2024); Chris Sharp Gallery, Los Angeles (2022); Klaus von Nichtssagend Gallery, New York (2018); and The Finley, Los Angeles (2017); amongst others.

His work has been featured in group exhibitions at Noon Projects, Los Angeles (2024); Marciano Art Foundation, Los Angeles (2024); Rebecca Camacho Presents, San Francisco (2024); Klaus von Nichtssagend Gallery, New York (2022); Various Small Fires, Los Angeles (2017); Barrick Museum of Art, University of Nevada Las Vegas (2016); and Yancey Richardson Gallery, New York (2015); amongst others.
