Biography

Anne Buckwalter (b. 1987, Lancaster, PA) lives and works in Durham, Maine. Buckwalter works primarily in painting, and her practice explores female identity, sexuality, intimacy, and domesticity. Her aesthetic is informed by folk art traditions in painting.

Buckwalter received her BFA from the Tyler School of Art in 2010 and her MFA from Maine College of Art in 2012. Her work has been included in solo exhibitions at Rebecca Camacho Presents, San Francisco (2024; 2022); Rachel Uffner, New York (2023); Friends Indeed, San Francisco (2022); Pentimenti Gallery, Philadelphia (2021); and the Freedman Gallery at Reading College, Reading, PA (2020); amongst others.

She has been in group exhibitions at Night Gallery, Los Angeles (2024); Micki Meng Gallery, San Francisco (2024); Rachel Uffner Gallery, New York (2024); Alexander Berggruen, New York (2023); Andrea Festa Fine Art, Rome, Italy (2023); Institute of Contemporary Art at Maine College of Art, Portland, ME (2023); Office Baroque, Antwerp, Belgium (2023); Nicola Vassell Gallery, New York (2022); and Monya Rowe Gallery, New York (2022); amongst others. Buckwalter has received grants from the Pollock-Krasner Foundation (2021); Idea Fund (2020); and the Joan Mitchell Foundation Emerging Artist Grant (2016); amongst others. She has been in residence at the Ellis-Beauregard Foundation, Rockland, ME (2023); Mass MoCA, North Adams, MA (2022); Galveston Artist Residency, Galveston, TX (2019-20); and the Vermont Studio Center, Johnson, VT (2018); amongst others.
