Biography
Marie Herwald Hermann (1979 b. Copenhagen, Denmark). She lives and works between Chicago and Copenhagen, Denmark. Spotlighting ordinary, functional objects, Marie Herwald Hermann gives weight to isolated moments of significance. In variance to the often mundane and utilitarian use of clay, Hermann creates boldly saturated, impeccably rendered domestic items to highlight the automatic nature of modern life, the things owned and used without notice.

She received her BFA at the University of Westminster, London in 2003 and her MFA at the Royal College of Art, London in 2009. Solo exhibitions include a forthcoming exhibition at Rebecca Camacho Presents, San Francisco (2025); Galerie NeC, Paris, France (2022; 2016); Reyes | Finn, Detroit (2021); and Paris London Hong Kong, Chicago (2018); amongst others. Hermann's work has been featured in group exhibitions at the Museum of Arts and Design, New York NY (2024); Kasmin Gallery, New York NY (2023); R & Company, New York NY (2021); Anastasia Tinari Projects, Chicago IL (2021); and Officine Saffi, Milano, Italy (2021); amongst others.

Hermann has received grants from the Danish Arts Foundation (2021; 2019; 2017-2015; 2014); and was a recipient of the Kresge Artist Fellows Grant (2013); amongst others.

Hermann's work is in the collections of The Danish Art Foundation, Copenhagen, Denmark; The Denver Art Museum, Denver; the Sevres Museum, Paris, France; the Nordenfjeldske Kunstindustrimuseum, Trondheim, Norway; the Cranbrook Art Museum, Detroit; The Jingdezhen Ceramic Art Museum, Jingdezhen, China; Muséedes Arts Décoratifs, Paris, France; and The Rothschild Collection, Waddesdon Manor, UK.
