Project Room | Maryam Yousif

Overview

Maryam Yousif’s solo exhibition in the gallery’s Project Room combines individual clay sculptures in an installation that demonstrates the artist’s ongoing exploration of Mesopotamian mythologies, histories and objects. Yousif’s current research centers the poetry of Enheduanna, a Sumerian high priestess and daughter on Sargon of Akkad (24th to 23rd centuries BCE), who is considered to be the first known author. Symbols and imagery found in Enheduanna’s poems and ancient antiquities from this region are fused with contemporary sources within Yousif’s expansive practice.
